At our centre, we have a highly specialist cornea and eye surface department.

The eye surface is a series of structures in the eye that work together and provide anatomical, physiological and immunological protection. It’s made up of the tear film, eyelids,  conjunctiva and cornea.

The cornea is the fine, transparent layer that closes the eyeball, in front of the iris and the pupil. It has multiple functions: as a transparent window into the eye it allows images to pass through it and acts as a powerful lens to help focus them on retina.

The main conditions treated in our department are:

  • Vernal conjunctivitis
  • Cornea guttata and Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy
  • Corneal dystrophy
  • Acanthamoeba keratitis
  • Bullous keratitis
  • Contact lens-related keratitis
  • Herpetic keratitis
  • Keratoconus
