'Mirem per tu’ project

Through the Mirem per tu project we offer free ophthalmic and optometric care to patients, of both Spanish and foreign nationalities, at risk of social exclusion. We are able to do this thanks to our partnership with the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, which provides the facilities, material and professionals for the Foundation patients.

In addition, the Barraquer Foundation functions in synergy with other organisations and companies like General Optica, which works with us to provide glasses at a reduced price for patients referred by the Barraquer Foundation.

Prevention and awareness

Every year, the Barraquer Foundation organises campaigns, information sessions and workshops on society's prevention and awareness of the importance of eye health. Any organisations, companies, institutions and schools interested in arranging this kind of activity should get in contact with us. We’d be delighted to work with you on any kind of awareness-raising initiative.

Training and scholarships

On an annual basis, the Barraquer Foundation awards scholarships to train ophthalmologists with limited resources, the majority of whom come from countries where medical expeditions are undertaken. Three to six month training periods are organised at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre during which, following the training programme devised by the Barraquer Institute, the students get training in all the sub-specialist areas of ophthalmology and acquire knowledge and experience that is very useful for their professional practice in their countries of origin.

The Barraquer Foundation covers the full cost of the trainees’ accommodation and board during their training periods at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre.

Research support

The Barraquer Foundation supports ophthalmic research through the Joaquin Barraquer Chair in Ophthalmology Research of Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). From time to time, we also partner with other prestigious institutions, like the University of Oxford, on research projects.

Medical expeditions

The Barraquer Foundation undertakes expeditions in developing countries where a team of volunteers and professionals from the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre performs cataract surgery on local patients.

The expeditions also have a teaching vocation and we always work in close collaboration with the medical institutions in the destination countries to organise, with the resources available in each case, theory- and practical-based training sessions for local professionals in vulnerable situations.
